What actually matters

Down or synthetic, decided by rain. Down gives more warmth for its weight and packs smaller, and it collapses when wet. Synthetic is bulkier and keeps insulating damp. In a wet climate that is not a close decision, unless the down is treated and the shell genuinely keeps water out.

Fill power, and fill weight. Fill power measures the quality of the down — how much loft per unit weight. Fill weight is how much is actually in the coat. A high fill power with very little down in it is a cold coat, and only quoting the first number is a common trick.

Where the shell is weakest. Shoulders and hood take the rain. A coat with a waterproof shell and taped seams is a different garment from one with a water-resistant finish that wets out in twenty minutes.

Hood and cuffs. A hood that does not adjust will blow off. Loose cuffs let warm air out with every arm movement. These small details change how warm a coat actually is far more than the insulation rating.

How we will test this

Worn in real winter conditions, including rain, with an honest note of the temperature and how long before cold got through. Water resistance tested by standing in actual rain rather than a spray bottle. Fill weight taken from the maker and stated alongside fill power.
