What actually matters

Where they fail, and it is always the same three places. The collar stretches and loses its shape, the fabric yellows or greys, and the shoulder seams twist. Everything below is about which construction resists which.

Collar construction. A ribbed collar with a taped seam across the back of the neck holds its shape far longer than a thin band stitched straight on. This is the single best predictor of how a shirt looks after a year.

Fabric weight. Below about 150 gsm a white shirt is likely to be see-through and to thin quickly. 180 to 200 gsm is substantial without being heavy.

Combed or ring-spun cotton. Both produce smoother, stronger yarn than standard carded cotton, which means less pilling and less greying as the surface stays even.

Side seams against tubular. A tubular shirt has no side seams, is cheaper to make, and tends to twist in the wash. Side seams hold the shape.

How we will test this

Twenty wash cycles at a normal temperature, photographed at one, ten and twenty against the same reference white, so yellowing is visible rather than described. Collar and shoulder measured at each stage to record stretch as a number.

Anything below 140 gsm, and anything blended with enough polyester to change what it is.

Questions people ask

How do I stop white shirts going grey?
Wash them with other whites only, avoid overloading the machine, and use less detergent rather than more — residue dulls the fabric. Sunlight helps; chlorine bleach tends to yellow cotton over time.
Is a heavier shirt always better?
Not always, but under about 150 gsm a white shirt is likely to be sheer and to wear thin quickly. Weight is the easiest quality signal to check before buying.
