Best mattress toppers for a too-firm bed
A soft memory foam topper can fix a bed that is too hard on your hips and shoulders, for a fraction of a new mattress. It cannot fix a bed that sags, and the softest ones are wrong for stomach sleepers.

Tempur-Pedic Tempur-Adapt + Cooling Topper
4.5 / 5
Our reading of Tom's Guide — their best mattress topper overall , 2026
The one both outlets rate, and Tom's Guide's best topper overall. Three inches of Tempur material turned a hard bed into a soft, body-hugging surface for side sleepers, and eased hip pain for their testers. The cooling version is worth the extra $80: Tom's Guide found the standard cover slept warm. The catch is that there is no trial and you cannot return it, so be sure you want a very soft bed before you buy.
Pros
- Very soft, pressure-relieving feel for side sleepers
- Removable, washable cooling cover
- 10-year warranty
Cons
- No sleep trial, non-returnable
- Too soft for back and stomach sleepers
- The most expensive pick here
- Depth
- 3 in
- Fits mattresses up to 13 in deep, per Tempur-Pedic
Where these findings come from
- Tom's Guide: best overall; 3 inches of Tempur material; plush cushioning that eased hip pain; best for side sleepers; removable, washable cool-to-the-touch cover; 10-year warranty
- Tom's Guide: too soft for back or stomach sleepers; no sleep trial and non-returnable; the original Adapt cover slept warm in their review
- TechRadar: the standard Tempur-Adapt topper is on their list as an outstanding luxury option, soft and supportive
Casper Comfy Mattress Topper
4.5 / 5
Our reading of Tom's Guide — their full review; best topper for side sleepers in their round-up , 2025
As soft as the Tempur, $140 cheaper for a queen, and it comes with a 30-night trial. Tom's Guide gave it full marks for both comfort and temperature regulation, which is unusual for memory foam: the top layer is perforated to let heat out. Two practical downsides: there are no straps, so it can shift, and the cover is spot-clean only.
Pros
- Plush, cushioning feel
- Top marks for staying cool, per Tom's Guide
- 30-night trial
Cons
- No anchor straps
- Spot-clean only
- Too soft for back and front sleepers
- Depth
- 3 in
Where these findings come from
- Tom's Guide: best for side sleepers; 3 inches with a perforated top foam layer; scored 5 of 5 for comfort and for temperature regulation; 30-night trial; 5-year warranty
- Tom's Guide: too soft for back and front sleepers; cover is spot-clean only; no straps to keep it in place
- Tom's Guide: rated 4.5 of 5; perforated foam did not overheat; cover should not be removed
Saatva High-Density Foam Mattress Topper
4.5 / 5
Our reading of Tom's Guide — their best luxury mattress topper , 2026
Tom's Guide's lead tester put this on a bed that was too firm for side sleeping and got back the shoulder pressure relief it had been missing. At 1.5 inches it is the thinnest pick here, and the least likely to need deeper fitted sheets. The 180-night trial is the longest here. The warranty is only a year, and it can shift in the night despite the straps.
Pros
- Medium feel: softer without a deep sink
- 180-night home trial
- Thin enough for existing sheets
Cons
- 1-year warranty
- Can shift despite straps
- Cover cannot be washed
- Depth
- 1.5 in
Where these findings come from
- Tom's Guide: best luxury; 1.5 inches of dense foam; on a bed too firm for side sleeping it gave the shoulder pressure relief the bed was missing; organic cotton cover; anchor straps; 180-night trial
- Tom's Guide: not supportive enough for stomach sleepers; cover is non-removable and spot-clean only; prone to shifting despite straps; 1-year warranty
- TechRadar: on their list as the slimline pick, contours well with superb support
Puffy Deluxe Mattress Topper
4.5 / 5
Our reading of Tom's Guide — their full review of the firm version; best memory foam topper in their round-up , 2025
Both reviewers tested the firm version and found it softened a very firm spring mattress, so for a too-firm bed the soft version is the safer bet. It has the most secure fit here: an elastic skirt and grippy base hold it on, like a fitted sheet. The cover is washable and the warranty is for life. It does trap heat, so hot sleepers should look at the Casper.
Pros
- Choice of soft or firm
- Elastic skirt keeps it in place
- Washable cover and lifetime warranty
Cons
- Sleeps warm
- Not for sleepers over 250 lb, per Tom's Guide
- Depth
- 2.5 in
- Tested version
- firm (both outlets)
Where these findings come from
- Tom's Guide: best memory foam topper; soft or firm versions; 2.5 inches; washable cover; grippy base and elastic skirt keep it in place; 101-night trial; lifetime warranty
- Tom's Guide: traps heat; may not be supportive enough for sleepers over 250 lb
- Tom's Guide: tested the firm version on a super-firm innerspring bed; it molded to the tester's shape
- TechRadar: their top-rated topper; reviewer found it cradled her joints in every position; sometimes traps heat
Lucid 4-inch Gel Memory Foam Topper
3.5 / 5
Our reading of Tom's Guide — their best cheap mattress topper , 2026
A thick slab of foam for roughly a quarter of the Tempur's price. Tom's Guide found the 4 inches of ventilated gel foam cushioned side sleepers' shoulders and hips and stayed cooler than they expected. You get what you pay for elsewhere: there is no cover and no straps, so it needs a fitted sheet over it to stay put. On 14 September the cooling gel version was out of stock in a queen at Lucid, which also sells charcoal and lavender versions that Tom's Guide did not test. No photograph, because Lucid's product photos show the 3-inch topper.
Pros
- About $120 for a queen
- Thick, plush cushioning
Cons
- No cover or straps
- Tested gel version out of stock in queen at Lucid
- No photograph
- Depth
- 4 in
Where these findings come from
- Tom's Guide: best cheap; 4 inches of gel-infused, ventilated memory foam; cushioned shoulders and hips for side sleepers; regulated temperature better than expected; 30-night trial and 3-year warranty when bought from Lucid
- Tom's Guide: no cover, so not washable and no anchor straps; too squishy for some
- TechRadar: on their list for cushioning comfort and softness
First, check the bed is not sagging
A topper changes how the surface of a mattress feels. It does not fix a dip. TechRadar is blunt about this: even a thick topper will sink into the sagging parts of the bed. If your mattress has a visible dip, or is more than about eight years old and uncomfortable, a topper is money spent on the wrong problem.
How soft to go
Side sleepers on a hard bed need their shoulders and hips to sink in. The Tempur and Casper are the softest here.
Back sleepers want a little cushioning without losing support. The Puffy is the one both reviewers found comfortable in every position, and it comes in two feels.
Stomach sleepers should be careful. Tom's Guide rates the Tempur and Casper as too soft for front sleepers, and even the Saatva could not support its tester's midsection when she slept on her front.
Thickness
Tom's Guide recommends 2 to 4 inches: thinner makes little difference, and thicker starts to feel squidgy. A thick topper also adds height, so check that your fitted sheets are deep enough.
Memory foam runs warm
Every pick here is foam, and foam holds heat. If you sleep hot, look for a perforated or ventilated foam (Casper, Lucid) or a cooling cover (the Tempur + Cooling).
Where this comes from
We do not test mattress toppers. This guide combines Tom's Guide, whose panel sleeps on each topper for at least three weeks, and TechRadar's round-up, which is older (last updated March 2024) and is used here only to cross-check the picks. Prices are from each brand's site on 14 September 2026, and a queen is quoted throughout.
What we are leaving out
Toppers that make a bed firmer, such as the ViscoSoft Active Cooling Topper. That is the opposite problem. Also thin mattress pads and protectors, which do not change how a bed feels.
Where this comes from
We did not test these. These people did.
Every score on this page rests on the testing below. The ranking is ours; the measurements are not. How we research.
- Tom's Guide — Toppers slept on for at least three weeks each by a testing panel with different sleep positions, scored for pressure relief, support, temperature regulation and set-up. Updated January 2026.
- TechRadar — US and UK toppers, most with a linked full review. Last updated March 2024, so it is used here to cross-check picks, not for prices.
- Tom's Guide — Full review of the Casper Comfy Mattress Topper, tested for over two weeks. Updated July 2025.
- Tom's Guide — Full review of the Puffy Deluxe Mattress Topper (firm version) on a very firm innerspring bed. Updated July 2025.
