The paper Pack Hacker put inside came out completely dry, and they rank it among the most comfortable bags they have carried. That pairing is the whole brief for a daily commute. There is room for a lunch box and a change of clothes as well as the laptop. The catch is packing order: when it is full, the pockets squeeze each other and the laptop is harder to pull out.

The other bag whose paper came out completely dry, at about half the price of the EVERGOODS, and built for bikes: webbing on the front carries a U-lock, and the fabric sheds water well. It looks like a cycling bag, which may not suit a formal office, and it has little inside organisation, so a small pouch helps.

The mesh back panel holds the bag off your back, which is what you want if you walk or cycle in warm weather and have a meeting on arrival. It was not quite as dry as the two above: after a heavy dousing, a small corner of the paper was damp. In ordinary rain that is unlikely to matter. No photograph or price: we could not find Osprey's product page for it, so the link is a search.

What actually matters
Water resistance, measured. Most bags claim to be water-resistant. Pack Hacker tests it by putting paper inside and pouring water over the bag. Only some came out completely dry, and those are the first two picks here.
A separate laptop compartment. A dedicated, padded sleeve, ideally lifted off the bottom of the bag, protects the laptop when you put the bag down hard.
Comfort for your commute. If you drive, almost any bag will do. If you walk or cycle for 20 minutes, straps, back panel and weight distribution matter more than pockets.
Size. Pack Hacker suggests 16 to 24 litres for most commutes: a laptop, charger, lunch and a layer.
Backpack or shoulder bag?
A backpack spreads the weight across both shoulders and is the better choice for walking or cycling. A messenger or briefcase looks smarter and is easier to get into on a train, but a heavy laptop on one shoulder is tiring over distance.
