Comfortable enough to wear all day, smart enough for most offices, and tougher than stretch denim usually is: OutdoorGearLab's sandpaper test left knees and hems without significant wear. It still wore faster than every non-stretch pair, which is the trade you make for the comfort. The cut is slim, so if you want room in the thigh, look at the 505. The one to buy if you want jeans to last: almost no wear in the abrasion test, and hardware that survived every pull. The cost is comfort. The denim is stiff, chafed OutdoorGearLab's testers when they moved, and pinched at the waist when sitting, and washing did not fix it much. Try them on before committing. No photograph and a quoted price, for the same reason as the 511.

Stretch or not
This is the decision that matters. Stretch denim has a little elastane woven in. It is comfortable from the first wear and moves with you, but it wears through faster. Non-stretch denim is stiff and can chafe for weeks, then lasts for years. OutdoorGearLab's sandpaper tests showed the pattern: the stretch Levi's 511 wore more than every non-stretch pair in the test, even though it held up well for stretch denim.
What actually matters
Fit for how you sit and move. A cut that looks right standing can pinch at the waist when seated. Try sitting and squatting in the fitting room.
Hardware. Belt loops and pockets are where cheap jeans fail first; one budget pair lost belt loops early in testing.
Weight of denim for work. Heavier denim resists abrasion.
About the testing date
OutdoorGearLab last updated this test in May 2023. These are long-running models that change slowly, but check the fabric description when you buy, since brands sometimes add stretch to a classic cut, and Carhartt's page for its jean no longer resolves for us.
Why there are no photographs
Levi's refuses our requests even in an ordinary browser, and the other brands do not have product pages we can read. Rather than use retailer photos we cannot verify, the picks carry search links and prices quoted from our source.
Where this comes from
We do not test clothing. Our source bought and wore nine pairs for work and everyday use and ran abrasion, pull and movement tests.
